Product Rating:

Tasting Notes:

Genmaicha is a traditional Japanese green tea. The lovely vegetal green flavor, indicative of Japan's steaming process, is balanced by the nutty flavor imparted by the roasted rice. The combination becomes an earthy tea that is as soothing to the soul as chicken noodle soup.

  • Green tea is rich in powerful antioxidants, and has been known to fight viruses and slow aging. Green tea aids in weight loss, reduces "bad" cholesterol, boosts the immune system, and is also associated with the prevention of cancer. Green tea is widely used as a natural preservative in food and cosmetics. It even looks fresh and healthy! Green helps overweight people shed excess fat without side effects. It may help modulate calorie and fat burning through the sympathetic nervous system, the adrenal glands and specific nerve chemicals. Green tea shows fat-burning properties beyond those explained by its caffeine content.

I am writing on the basis of a sample received which, though it was not quite what I expected, delighted me very much! I've always known Genmaicha as the savory, nutty-tasting Japanese green tea with visible pieces of toasted rice in it. Well, no Rice Krispies in my sample, just straight, emerald leaves. These brewed to a a most beautiful, slightly opaque, luminous sea glass green with a distinct floral, almost jasmine-y flavor. "Wondrous" is the word I think of in connection with sipping this tea. It's full of flavor, even without the rice. I did get a tinge of sludge in the bottom of my cup. Was this the rice part? I will have to order a larger bag of it to find out, but whichever side of the fence the "real tea" sits, I know I'm a fan. I got five -- count that -- five infusions. All of them were that incredible sea glass green color and with each successive infusion, tasted incrementally more of the ocean. I could almost hear the gulls screaming overhead, the smash of waves on barnacle-crusted rocks, the crackle and hiss of foam on smooth, wet sand as I sipped. —Sophie
This is now my go to tea when I want to taste the rich popcorn rice flavor. I have tried two other Japanese Genmaicha teas (they were the same price per ounce) and the Tea Spot carries the best one. It is rich in the brown rice flavor and very mild on my sensitive stomach as I am extremely sensitive to caffeine.—Nana
I do love genmaicha tea, and this is exactly what you'd expect genmaicha to be. That said, I didn't think it was anything special for a genmaicha either. This will be an occasional, but not staple tea for me.—Jennifer
This is, without a doubt, my absolute favorite tea. I'm a green tea addict and I discovered this when I ordered the Green Tea Sampler. That was a couple years ago. I've tried numerous other Greens from numerous other sources, and nothing compares. I have a high-stress job and this tea helps me to remain calm and focused throughout the day. It also tastes amazing! I go through it faster than water. —Hannah
I ordered a sampler pack and was excited to try them all! This morning I tried this one and unfortunately it is not my cup of tea because I could only drink a few sips before I had to stop:( I will try it again another day, but it will probably be one that I do not reorder.—Kathy
I LOVE genmaicha, and this one is terrific. Nice and nutty!—Julie
So excited to be the first to rate this tea on Steepster. So my husband has been drinking Genmaicha tea for years and I would every now and then smell and taste it and I couldn’t quite understand what he loved about this tea! I really couldn’t however, this was before I fell in love with Tea and boy do I really like this tea. Just like how I had to acquire the taste for wine the same goes for tea and this one is no exception. Once you “find” this tea you will love it! The Tea Spot has done this Genmaicha tea to perfection. The roasted brown rice really gives this green tea its flavor source with an incredible hearty nuttiness.—Cindy
Was not sure what to expect from this tea with roasted rice, but it's really nice. It blends beautifully with the green, and makes an almost savory cup.—Shelly
I got a sampler order and this was one of the teas. It has become my go to tea and one of the few teas that I love without adding anything sweet to it. I love the taste that the roasted rice adds to the flavor. Very good tea!—Adam
I usually drink green tea with a little honey and lemon, but I tried this one straight first and it doesn't need anything added to it! The roasted rice is a nice touch. The flavor is subtle and quite lovely. This is definitely going into my favorites pile. —Suz
I was underwhelmed by the Genmaicha. Maybe that makes me a snob. Normally I LOVE this tea, but I was disappointed that the flavors aren't more pronounced. It is still good; I guess I just have high expectations from The Tea Spot.—Dr. P
I love the toasted rice, added to the lovely green tea.—sailtracysail
When I first saw this tea, it looked so odd!! I can't say that I've ever seen rice in tea but after tasting it, I can say that it's a brilliant idea! The taste of the rice isn't too overpowering, but is definitely distinct! I suppose this tea would be perfect when eating sushi or something with rice in it! Enjoyable and tasty!—Randi
let me begin by saying what a big fan I am of the tea spot... I am sorry to say that this was one of the most off putting flavor of tea I have encountered. I gave it a try despite some differing reviews, but I could not even get more than 3 sips down. —kmack15
Genmaicha's roasted flavor makes it an ideal accompaniment to a hearty meal. I would recommend only drinking this tea hot. Cold brewed, it gets kind of strange. The green tea is lovely with the roasted rice bits providing a savory overtone.—Kyra
Bought a sample and loved it so much will be buying more. It has a rich, hearty flavor...just delicious.—Corey
I love the uniqueness of this tea! Brewed it for about 3 minutes and it was absolutely perfect.—Dominique
The roasted rice pairs beatifully with the green tea. One you will probably like or hate, depending on how you like the typical Japanese green tea. I would, however, not recommend it for people going completely grain-free. —Jen
I can drink this tea as if it's soup for lunch. —Tillie
Fit right in with the memory of other Genmaichas I've had. The rice makes it taste like breakfast cereal or popcorn (un-salted/buttered). If this is a flavor you like then you will like this tea, and the Tea Spot's Genmaicha is very representative of this type. I enjoy it very much.—Todd
Absolutely adore this tea. You really can't go wrong with it. I've gotten three full brews out of each serving. It has a rich, toasted, and nutty taste / smell that is delicious and leaves me satisfied. Teaspot has done their researching and has brought a premium product for a low-end price. Would definitely buy again and again.—Jessi D.
Agreed, Nancy! This is a fresh, green, well-balanced Genmaicha, Really hits the spot.—Marissa Beringer
I love this tea. You can brew each serving 3 times. Keeps me from eating all afternoon long. Refreshing and nourishing.—Stacy K
My favorite tea that came with the green tea sampler. Awesome!—Kevin D
Tastes like fish to me. Threw it away. Is it supposed to taste like fish ?—Kathie
I just brewed my first cup of Genmaicha, and it is freaking awesome!! —Ryan
