Tasting Notes:

This classic blend is strong and bold, with an intriguing complexity—just how we like our breakfast teas. Our Organic Russian Caravan’s sophistication stems from the careful composition of four high-quality organic large leaf teas—lapsang souchong, dark oolong, assam, & puerh—perfectly balanced to deliver a kiss of smoke and sweetness to your palate. This tea brings new life to an ancient tradition of flavor.

Historically, teas were brought to Russia from China via large caravans of camels. They transported massive cargos of Chinese loose leaf tea over 5000 miles from Peking to Moscow: smoky black teas, large leaf oolongs, and aged puerh were mixed and consumed along the arduous journey. They called it Camel Caravan Tea, but today it is known throughout the world as Russian Caravan.

  • Black Tea is known to banish fatigue, stimulate mental powers, and raise energy levels. It has been shown to reduce stress hormone levels and acts as a nerve sedative, frequently relieving headaches. Black tea contains a number of vitamins considered essential for maintaining health, including Carotene, a precursor to vitamin A, has antioxidant and protective properties, Vitamin B1 and Panothenic Acid, Vitamin C and Vitamin B6.

Black Tea also contains antioxidants which may help to protect your body from the ravages of aging and environmental effects. Because they are allowed to ferment completely before drying, most black teas are especially rich in those polyphenols which have been shown to be effective against dementia in aging as well as AIDS related dementia. These compounds penetrate the blood brain barrier and have also been found to reduce blood cholesterol levels.

Black tea is known for its antiviral and antibacterial properties. It can be topically applied to cuts, bruises and burns, and is famous for its sunburn relief and has been shown to have a positive effect on preventing tooth decay and gum disease.

I got my order and really am enjoying this tea. It has a delicious flavor!—Heidi Casso
I adore this tea. My husband calls it the tea for scotch drinkers, because it has similar tones of earthiness and smokeyness. It has a lightly piney hint of flavor that always reminds me of a campfire in the woods. —Masterpiecelost
I make my own blends all the time with pu'erh, dark roast Oolong, ect. My Iron Goddess is discontinued(boo) and I found this while looking for a new tea. Can't wait to get it.—gina
I like strong tea and often mix my own. Russian Caravan is a great mix and I like that it is organic. I drink it almost every morning.—ls27
I have been trying to find the kind of tea served at my local Chinese buffet and this is it! The other brands that I found were far too smokey, this is just right!—Kitchen Fairy
Full leaf, not crushed and cheap tasting like others I’ve tried. —Cheri
I gave this tea 3 stars because the flavor was weird and aftertaste was, for lack of batter terminology, yucky. This is definitely a tea with a huge kick for me because I didn't read that it had assam and that tea is like a jolt for me. I'm really wondering what it would be like without the assam. The flavor was smooth and somewhat sweet and I'm assuming the pu-erh and the assam gave the tea the weird, in a good way, aroma. Although not a tea for me, it might be for someone else if you like a good strong cup of tea.—Tris
This has quickly become my go-to breakfast tea. I love the smell and adore the taste. Very smoky, strong, and dark. A lovely blend of black teas.—momx2g1b
Russian Caravan is the first of 2 black tea blends I've tried from the Tea Spot. What an outstanding blend!! Well balanced, great spice with some smoke, a little acidity, and a very bold sense of Hello There, I'm your tea and you're going to remember this cup. —mcjee
Yikes, not at all what I expected. Zero Oolong taste. If it is oolong tea the smoke flavor completely covers it up. Waste of money if you are looking for oolong.—MarcT
Opened the pack and boom heavy campfire smell. I rinsed the tea once and then brewed for 45 seconds. WOW very Smokey still and did not like it at all. 2nd steep for minute and 30 seconds. Smokey flavor has died down a lot and it's nice tea. If you're not fond of the Smokey flavor. Rinse the tea a couple of times, very quick steeps 10 - 30 seconds. That will make this a really nice tea. Gave it 4 stars, I would like about 1/2 the Lapsang and more oolong and pu'erh!. - Ronnie—rprvw
It was an oddball Australian that tipped me off to Russian Caravan. His american wife also suggested it to me. I was hesitant of the description of smoke and campfire. When I got my first bulk order I opened it up for a smell. It smelled like a forest fire and I feared the worst. "I don't think I'm going to like this." And I was wrong. I loved it. Once brewed this tea is unlike I've ever tasted. It really does taste of a campfire on the Mongolian steppe. Of a peat bog fire on the Scottish highlands. The tea steeps into a dark, red, rich liquid. The caffeine levels are not too strong and won't make your heart race. The tea can be steeped more than once. Roll the dice on something different and get a taste of what the earth has to offer.—Shogun
An inspired mix of earthy, smokey, malty, and -- hallelujia -- a good second steep! Third infusion, amazingly, still retains the scent of a forest campfire plus some sweetness the first infusions didn't have. The smokey taste does stay with you a good while afterward which I enjoyed. That being said, I had hoped for more liveliness, more depth, more layers of complexity, given all the wonderful teas that comprise this traditional blend. Overall very nice if you like rugged, robust, and outdoorsy in your cup. You don't need coffee if you have this in the morning! —Sophie
I absolutely love the Russian Caravan Tea. It has a smokey flavor too it akin to a campfire. it is a full flavor and taste different from any other teas I've tried and has gone to the top of the list as my favorite. Will be reordering this in a larger size for sure!!—Cath
This tea has a nice rich/dark color and has a smooth taste to it. However the smoke flavor is a bit much for my taste. I was expecting the smoke flavor to be more of a back ground note to the tea. I set aside my sample and focused on the other samples that I got which I prefer better.—Will
I opened this package of tea with a giddy excitement and was so overwhelmed by the stench that came from the bag. Was that campfire I smelled? Hmm.... I went ahead and a brewed a cup and took a few sips. Man, this is awful. I tried drinking the tea for the next few hours and slowly got through the cup. I was really bummed that this tea was (in my opinion) so bad. It left a smoky flavor in my mouth and it was hard to ignore. I called customer service and spoke to a woman about it. She confirmed it was the lapsang souchong that had the smoky aroma and flavor. She suggested I give it a few more tries and even recommended a few recipes that work well with these tea leaves. I liked her idea so I kept the tea and tried it a few days later. Still not my favorite but not as bad. And few days after that, tolerable. A few days after THAT, enjoyable. This will probably never be my favorite tea but I am glad I kept giving it a chance. Now I can drink it and appreciate it's unique flavor and profile. But ready for that campfire POW in the beginning. —Jessica
I love a good, strong tea and this was excellent in that respect. The first cup was so strong it tasted like a burnt tire so on the second batch I lessened the amount of tea and only steeped for about four minutes and this did the trick. It's smoky and rich and makes for a very satisfying break in mid-afternoon when I'm starting to drag. I really like this one and I'm glad I tried it out. —Janice
I have always loved Lapsang Souchong tea. The aroma reminds me of Latakia pipe tobacco. Russian Caravan has a "hefty" aroma and delicious taste due to the addition of Oolong. I have also found that it can, indeed, be brewed a second time, which lowers the "cost per cup" significantly. Lovely drink.—Dave
When I opened the sample pack I was concerned about the depth of the smokiness. Once brewed I fell in love with it. I actually crave a cup of Russian as I tell my husband. —Adreanna
My son had this first and told me I just had to try it. So, I did, and was thrown by the smokiness of it. However, I went back and tried it again, and just kept going back. It is a wonderful way to start the day. Though, it does take a bit to enjoy the smokiness of it, rather than being thrown by it. It's good for you, too, which is another reason to try it again, and again. The scent of it still throws my husband, who won't try it, so I get all the goodness to myself. Nice.—GoPete
This tea is great, but the flavor is not for me. A bit to smoky for my tastes. Having said that, it is still a fantastic - high quality - tea to keep on hand when you want a deep, statement flavor.—Hthorn
My mouth is so confused! All of these black teas are favorites and I totally expected to love this blend. My taster and my brain keep trying to find the powerful tastes of lapsang souchong and puerh, both of which I love. Because, yes, this is a blend and I keep looking for individual flavors. I do not hate it and may learn to really love it. I am giving it 4 stars because I think it is an excellent tea and it can't be helped that I keep trying to separate out the individual teas.—Gloria
I ordered a sample of Russian Caravan and Oh My Goodness! This one hits our list of 'must have in the tea drawer'. Sip this tea with your eyes closed and you would swear you were sipping tea along side of an ancient caravan next to a wonderful fire. Warm, earthy, complex and a subtle hint of campfire smoke. Truly one of my favorite bold teas!—CJ
By far this is my favorite tea of all time. It's strong, it's smokey, and at times it's borderline funky. Russian Caravan is an absolutely perfect blend if you're into tea that'll smack you upside the head. If you're new to tea however... I'd probably wait before trying it, because most people new to tea like this can't get over the smell. —J.Kilde

This sounds strange, but this tea reminds me of leather. The smoky flavor is deep, sultry, almost sensual. It's a step away from the ordinary but it evokes an earthy comfort of which I can't get enough. What a delight!—Abby
You can't go wrong with this blend if you love a smoky flavored tea. Its very smooth as well, no bitterness at all.—JulieVee
I wasn't sure if this tea was what I expected it to be when I first opened it. I made a cup of it and as soon as I took my first sip there it was, right away: gloomy November morning in Russia, I am still about 8 or 9, I have to get ready for school and leave while it is still dark outside, my grandmother is making my breakfast and the only comforting thing about all this is my grandma's hands and the hot tea... I didn't even know I had that memory until I had this tea! It was truly amazing! Amazing tea! Very good flavor, sophisticated and strong! —Ella
If you like single malt unblended scotch this is the oolong for you. Wonderful smoke scent and flavor a good replacement for your strong morning cup of coffee.—wildman
This really wasn't to my taste, reminds me of a smoked BBQ meat.—LMN127
Ordered a sample of these tea and was taken aback by the smoky aroma, think campfire. I was worried that the flavor may be overpowering, but I did not find this to be the case. Very full bodied and enjoyable. I will be placing a bulk order to have on hand. If your not afraid of smoky teas I would highly recommend.—Andrew
I ordered this tea in the sample size, as I have never tried a pu'reh team before. When I opened it I was a bit nervous by the smell, but as they say, YOLO. This isa bold flavored tea, but in a delightful way. It's smooth, smokey, and is perfect with a bit of raw honey. I just re-ordered in bulk and can't wait to make this tea part of my daily ritual!—Shannon Roth
I can't get enough. Excellent smokey flavor, it is my morning go to tea. —Calico67
I gave this as a gift to a Russian friend of mine, and she said it was much better than the tea of the same name she got in Russia. —Jen
this tea is very smokey. If you don't like lapsang souchong you will not like this probably.—anne delano
I have found a new favorite. This is wonderful, smoky, full bodied tea that is perfect for those mornings when it is just too hard to get moving. It has the wonderful smokiness of lapsang souchong but is a milder smoke due to the combination of other teas with the lapsang souchong. The pu'erh adds a wonderful deep almost chocolatey note. If you love lapsang souchong you will rave about the delicious taste of this tea. I highly recommend it!—Jennifer Baldwin
    yum thank you—Pamela Pitt
