Never So Proud to Get a “B”

by jessica on 09/07/2011 in 10% to Cancer Wellness (Social Outreach), Boulder Roots, Freestylin'

B Corp CertifiedBetter than the B-side of a record, we’ve recently attained B Corp status! Certified B Corps (where B stands for ‘Benefit’) are a new kind of company that uses the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. Unlike traditional corporations, Certified B Corps are legally required to consider the impact of their decisions on their employees, suppliers, community, consumers, and environment.  Cofounder of B Corp Jay Coen Gilbert states “B Corporation certification is key to distinguish good companies from just good marketing. With their commitment to the triple bottom line, The Tea Spot stands as a leader in the movement for a better way to do business”.

Throughout the certification process it helped us develop and articulate a set of core values for our company which we have since added to our employee handbook. Even though we’re a small company currently, integrating these hard core commitments now will help keep us aligned with our goals as we grow. Our vision for a profitable, sustainable and philanthropic business has a singular focus: to help people live longer, healthier lives by making loose leaf tea an everyday luxury. Our mantra, “Modern Brewing. Conscious Living.” translates into five core values:

1. Develop groundbreaking innovations and deliver extraordinary customer experiences in support of our mission.

2. Ensure that our products have a positive net effect on the environment and their practices are consistent with eco-friendly values.

3. Inspire and support each other at the workplace through employee ownership and reciprocal relationships – understanding that respect, integrity and active teamwork are the building blocks of our successes.

4. Build and maintain reciprocal relationships based on respect and integrity with the buyers, suppliers, and colleagues in our community and industry.

5. Advance our mission through social entrepreneurship by means of our 10% Pledge for Cancer Wellness, donating 10% of all sales in-kind to cancer wellness and community programs.

We were since featured by Development Crossing, a Corporate Social Responsibility & Sustainable Development media company, in their CSR Minute news report for attaining this certification. They feature companies committed to a triple bottom line (people, planet, & profits). You can watch the quick video segment here.

Nilgiri & Teal

by Bo on 08/31/2011 in 10% to Cancer Wellness (Social Outreach), Black Tea, Iced Tea, Tea Gifts

It’s time to talk Nilgiri. Nilgiri is India’s southernmost growing region, and its teas carry very distinct characteristics. Known primarily (almost exclusively) for its black teas, Nilgiri produces just 30% of its tea from large plantations. The rest is in the hands of smaller farms, who adhere to traditional growing processes. The result is a tea with a strong, unique fragrance, a mild sweetness, and a dark, rich liquor. It’s wonderful as a breakfast tea on a cold day, and exceptional as an iced tea in the warmer months (in my most humble opinion). Our organic Blue Mountain Nilgiri is a real favorite at the Farmer’s Market.

With gift giving season and some cold mornings just appearing on the horizon, this tea is a perfect fit for our Tough In Teal gift set, which commemorates Wear Teal Day. This year the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance’s ‘Wear Teal Day’ falls on Friday, September 2nd, so please show your support by donning your teal duds on Friday. As you know, cancer awareness has always been and will always be a huge effort for us as a company, and we encourage you share your support.

Japanese Relief Efforts

by jessica on 03/18/2011 in 10% to Cancer Wellness (Social Outreach), Green Tea

Map of Japan

I’ve never been in love with one place more (never having visited) than I am with Japan. From the people to the culture, the anime, the films, the tea, sushi, and harajuku, I’m in love. And the list goes on. So my heart truly goes out to Japan during the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami. There are so many issues that remain to be dealt with even after the ground stops shaking and the water subsides. I was relieved to finally hear back from a friend of mine who lives in Tokyo, days after the quake. Clearly shaken, this is what she reports:

At that day big earthquakes occured, I went to home on foot 2 and half hours walking. My family is ok, Today is 3/15.  I go to the office  by bicycle. It is 1 hour ride. Commuter system is very bad now. Power shortage is problem here Tokyo. We are very shocked … But TV says second big earthquake may occur Tokyo or same area. We are so scared.

Japanese Glass TeapotsI’m so glad to work for a company that does outreach when disasters like this occur. As of today, we are donating 25% of all Japanese teas and teapots sold through the end of the month to Doctors Without Borders, a humanitarian organization offering urgent health care to people affected by this disaster. In a message sent from the field yesterday, they report:

The majority of consultations were elderly patients with chronic diseases. Many of them were running out of medications for hypertension and diabetes. Snow and sub-zero temperatures further complicated the picture… [Doctors Without Borders] ordered 25,000 blankets from a supply base in Dubai that should arrive in the next few days.

Genmaicha Green TeaAnother impressive fundraising effort by Living Social is raising money for the Japanese Red Cross. They’ve raised nearly $2 million so far - simply by matching people’s $5 donations. That’s the power of numbers!

Please raise a glass of Japanese tea in support. Every little bit helps!

Book Talk & Tea

by anna on 03/04/2011 in 10% to Cancer Wellness (Social Outreach)

Susan Conley's The Foremost Good Fortune

This past week I’ve enjoyed reading an extremely honest memoir by Susan Conley: The Foremost Good Fortune.

The story unfurls in Beijing, China after her family relocates due to her husband’s job. She, her husband Tony and her two young sons experience a complete culture shock. They live life as “normally” as possible; her sons attend school, her husband leaves for work trips, and Susan tries to grocery shop in a language she struggles to speak. The journey that began with challenges of new beginnings in new places evolves into a battle with breast cancer.

It evokes such an array of emotions, a reader of any age is sure to identify. Themes such as belonging, love, motherhood, uncertainty, illness, friendship, fear, and cultural identity fill each page of Conley’s story.

I especially enjoyed her sons’ relief throughout the family’s struggle. It captivated the honesty and naïveté with which children naturally brighten many situations.

On a complete side note, I was excited to be ahead of Oprah’s Book Club and recommendations! The Foremost Good Fortune was listed in “15 Books to Watch for in February 2011.”

I’m looking forward to hearing Susan speak about her memoir today at HealthLinks Clinic in Boulder, CO. We will be serving tea at the event as part of our 10% Pledge for Cancer Wellness! If you’re in the area, you should come. It starts at 2 and it’s $FREE.99! To reserve your spot, call 303-443-1937.

Cheers to literacy!

Teas the Season

by anna on 11/04/2010 in 10% to Cancer Wellness (Social Outreach), Loose Leaf Tea, Steepware®, Tea Gifts

As I enter the world of tea and blogging, I feel as though the tea timing is impeccable. Always a fan but not an avid drinker, I most typically prepared tea during the cold seasons. Growing up in Arizona I enjoyed iced tea for the (eight month long) sweltering summers, but by no standards was I truly experiencing tea.

Image from PixelMaverick.com

Then I found my spot.

Joining The Tea Spot has introduced me to the world of tea and loose leaf luxury. Simultaneously, I am exploring the beautiful territory that is Boulder, Colorado. With this being my first fall and winter in a state which experiences true seasons, tea discovery could not have come at a more perfect time.

I must say, during my first week of true tea consumption, I went into tea overload. Free radicals and excitement consumed me and I couldn’t expel them quickly enough! Once I managed my hydration to tea ratio, I felt brand new. The energy and rejuvenation completely sold me for regular tea drinking.

In addition to enjoying the effects, I also love the process of steeping loose leaves. Using Steepware allows for such a fresh and tangible steeping process. And I’ll be honest; the lid-saucer and infuser combo makes me feel fancy.

To my delight, everyday I mix and match the Steepware, rarely using a uniform color. Depending on the day, the pieces will match my mood, my scarf, or whatever colors seems essential to accompany my tea.

So with this new, exciting endeavor at The Tea Spot and in Colorado, daily cuppas are transitioning me into a true winter. With each cup, I welcome the winter, snow and holiday season. Similarly are the tea veterans at The Tea Spot with baked goods, sampling holiday blends and even participating in the Colorado Country Christmas Gift Show.

We’ll be setting up shop along with other local artisans at Denver’s Merchandise Mart November 5-7, 2010. Like I said before about feeling fancy, our loose leaf tea and Steepware make for excellent gifts. Practical and healthy masqueraded by luxury and refinement, a tin of tea and/or piece of Steepware will be well received. As the giver, one can feel great about purchases contributing to cancer wellness donations.

On of my favorite aspects of The Tea Spot is the 10% for Cancer Wellness Pledge. In pursuit of the original mission, The Tea Spot has promoted wellness through consumers as well as recipients of in-kind donations.

‘Tis the season to be generous; why not gift and give?

Steep It Pink – We’re matching donations!

by jessica on 10/13/2010 in 10% to Cancer Wellness (Social Outreach), Tea Gifts, Tea Health

breast cancer donations

Last year, more than 40,000 women died from breast cancer. Fortunately, the U.S. death rate from breast cancer has decreased by 30% since 1990.  Early detection deserves much of the credit. Studies show that screening mammography causes a significant reduction in mortality from breast cancer between age 40 and 50. – http://www.bch.org/
For Breast Cancer Awareness month we’ve partnered with Boulder Community Hospital – who with Rocky Mountain Cancer Center are Colorado’s largest and most comprehensive provider of cancer care – to contribute to their breast cancer support programs.  For every STEEP IT PINK set you purchase this month, we’re matching that with a donation to women who are on their road to recovery – both gifts valuing $18.94. Please help us give generously to these women while hooking up the amazing women in your life with a great gift! And a sweet friendly reminder to keep up with regular examines & mammogram screenings.

Check it out & show support for the girls!

Boulder Busts Cancer Fundraiser… Or Bust!

by The Tea Spot on 09/22/2010 in 10% to Cancer Wellness (Social Outreach), Boulder Roots

In a week from tomorrow, The Tea Spot ladies will be wining and dining at the art auction and “Girls Night Out” Boulder Busts Cancer fundraiser. All proceeds from the evening benefit Boulder Community Hospital Auxiliary’s Breast Cancer Treatment Fund. The Fund helps underinsured or uninsured patients get needed medical services following a suspicious or positive mammogram. Since more women in Boulder County are diagnosed with breast cancer than almost any other county in Colorado (Larimer County actually has the most diagnoses), participation in this event is crucial in spreading awareness about the dreaded disease and to raise funds to support women in need.

As a woman-owned and operated business, The Tea Spot will be a proud sponsor of female artist Dvora Kanegis, whose work will be available for sale at the event. The uplifting spirit of the painting itself is a perfect match for our vision of helping people live healthier and longer lives. A handful of unique artists will be presenting their bust-themed work, including decorated bras, and tickets will be sold to vote for the “Best Bust.” Tickets for the evening are set at a reasonable $30 and any women who have, had, or know someone with breast cancer is encouraged to join. Unfortunately, almost everyone knows someone whose life has been disrupted by cancer and what could be a better opportunity for survivors, supporters, and fighters to come together than a cocktail party? If cocktails and appetizers don’t strike your fancy, perhaps a dinner at one of Boulder’s finest restaurants will entice you. And don’t forget about the featured artwork. It’s gonna be a hoot!

I have listed the who, what, where, and when below. Don’t miss out!

Who: Ladies (Sorry, gents)

What: BCH Auxiliary Boulder Busts Cancer Fundraiser

  • Call 303.440.2066 to order tickets ($30)

Where: Gebhardt BMW, 4720 Valmont Road in Boulder

More on Locks of Love…

by The Tea Spot on 10/21/2009 in 10% to Cancer Wellness (Social Outreach)

I feel the need to elaborate a little on my last post

In accordance with our social mission to donate 10% of ALL sales to cancer wellness & community programs, I finally cut my hair. It took me close to a year to grow it long enough to donate it to Locks of Love.
Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. Their ‘mission is to return a sense of self, confidence and normalcy to children suffering from hair loss by utilizing donated ponytails to provide the highest quality hair prosthetics to financially disadvantaged children. The children receive hair prostheses free of charge or on a sliding scale, based on financial need.’
Cancer constitutes the second highest percentage of their recipients. Every year approximately 2,200 children under age 20 are diagnosed with brain tumors. Radiation treatment to the brain stem as a treatment for cancer can cause permanent hair loss. Chemotherapy may also cause hair loss to be long-term depending on the length of treatment needed.

It is amazing, something I took for granted is something a young child relies on for normalcy. Anyhow, I am not elaborating on my experience to toot my own teapot. I am trying to spread the word. It is a great cause that will help kids feel confident, beautiful and like everybody else.

Just find a great hair dresser.

If you live in or near Boulder, CO go, to Zing Hair. They treat their customers like family.

Give Some Love to the Ladies!

by The Tea Spot on 10/14/2009 in 10% to Cancer Wellness (Social Outreach), Tea Gifts

With so much around us plastered in pink and ribbons this month (including our homepage) it has become visually striking that people are truly banding together to raise awareness and funding for Breast Cancer. And the exciting part is that the collective efforts seem to be growing each year!

In line with our company’s commitment to donating 10% of our sales (not to be mistaken for profits) as in-kind gifts to cancer wellness and community programs, we are doing something special this month. With each STEEP IT PINK set we sell this month (see image), we will give a gift of Snowflakes white tea and a Steeping Cup (valuing ~$27) to the breast cancer survivors participating in Casting for Recovery. This non-profit program is designed to incorporate the sport of fly-fishing and reconnecting to nature to encourage mental and physical healing of the participants as they recover from breast cancer. Participation in their program is free of charge to the women and primarily funded though the generosity of donors. We are so proud to be partnering with them and hope to be able to give generously to these women, with your help of course.

In the spirit of giving, FOODORO, a new gourmet food website that just launched earlier this year, is also doing a great Breast Cancer Awareness Promotion for the next couple weeks. They started carrying our teas and teaware a few months ago in addition to many other tasty finds. Right now they are promoting an array of breast cancer gifts which includes our STEEP IT PINK set on their homepage as well as in their Breast Cancer Awareness specialty shop. Check out all of the gifts and donations that will result. They’ve even got cute ribbons on the product photos to identify the donation amounts that each company is giving. Collectively, we can make a difference!
