Farmer’s Market Begins!

by Bo on 04/05/2012 in Boulder Roots, Hot Spots, Iced Tea, Loose Leaf Tea

Well, it’s that time of the year again. It always comes so soon. The weather is beautiful, sunny, things are starting to turn green, and this weekend marks the year’s first Farmer’s Market here in Boulder.

There’s a lot to look forward to: we’ve got a new and exciting tea list, some great new signage premiering our new look (not pictured here), and I can’t wait to see a few familiar faces out there. Oh, and the food. How could I forget the amazing food? It might still be early for some of my favorite veggies, but it should be a gorgeous day to grab a taster of tea by the creek. While you’ll have to come on down to see everything we offer, I can say with confidence that I’ll be serving out some Climber’s High, Chocolate Peppermint Patty, and Iced Blue Mountain Nilgiri (if it’s warm enough!). There will be other samples as well, so if you’re a Boulder local, come on down and check it out.

As always, our website offers a Farmer’s Market Pickup option so that you can pick up orders from us directly at Saturday Farmer’s Market and save on shipping.

Never So Proud to Get a “B”

by jessica on 09/07/2011 in 10% to Cancer Wellness (Social Outreach), Boulder Roots, Freestylin'

B Corp CertifiedBetter than the B-side of a record, we’ve recently attained B Corp status! Certified B Corps (where B stands for ‘Benefit’) are a new kind of company that uses the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. Unlike traditional corporations, Certified B Corps are legally required to consider the impact of their decisions on their employees, suppliers, community, consumers, and environment.  Cofounder of B Corp Jay Coen Gilbert states “B Corporation certification is key to distinguish good companies from just good marketing. With their commitment to the triple bottom line, The Tea Spot stands as a leader in the movement for a better way to do business”.

Throughout the certification process it helped us develop and articulate a set of core values for our company which we have since added to our employee handbook. Even though we’re a small company currently, integrating these hard core commitments now will help keep us aligned with our goals as we grow. Our vision for a profitable, sustainable and philanthropic business has a singular focus: to help people live longer, healthier lives by making loose leaf tea an everyday luxury. Our mantra, “Modern Brewing. Conscious Living.” translates into five core values:

1. Develop groundbreaking innovations and deliver extraordinary customer experiences in support of our mission.

2. Ensure that our products have a positive net effect on the environment and their practices are consistent with eco-friendly values.

3. Inspire and support each other at the workplace through employee ownership and reciprocal relationships – understanding that respect, integrity and active teamwork are the building blocks of our successes.

4. Build and maintain reciprocal relationships based on respect and integrity with the buyers, suppliers, and colleagues in our community and industry.

5. Advance our mission through social entrepreneurship by means of our 10% Pledge for Cancer Wellness, donating 10% of all sales in-kind to cancer wellness and community programs.

We were since featured by Development Crossing, a Corporate Social Responsibility & Sustainable Development media company, in their CSR Minute news report for attaining this certification. They feature companies committed to a triple bottom line (people, planet, & profits). You can watch the quick video segment here.

Steeping Around in Las Vegas

by jessica on 07/21/2011 in Boulder Roots, Eco-friendly, Freestylin', Loose Leaf Tea, Reviews, Tea Travel

When we were in Las Vegas last month, at World Tea Expo, we had the pleasure of meeting a really fun group of people from the podcast radio show “Steeping Around“. They were in search of the best new gadgets in tea. The crew from Steeping Around approached our booth, interested in learning about our recently launched Brewlux – a large-volume loose leaf tea filter for to-go tea – and our Tuffy Steeper – a telescoping travel tea infuser. So…. the host and producer of Steeping Around, Manish & Tere, sat down to officially interview our Tea Specialist, Bo Olson. They discussed the ins & outs, the whys & hows.

Then…. like Christmas in July, they sent us a link to their completely amazing and professionally-produced radio segment that recently aired on FoodRadioNetwork.com. We were blown away! They are so personable & enthusiastic about loose leaf tea, and so much fun to listen to! So grab a cup of tea, sit back and enjoy listening to these wonderful people and stories (and dulcet voices, if I might add)… The entire segment features us throughout!

Yellow Scene Magazine visits Tee & Cakes, The Unseen Bean

by Bo on 05/25/2011 in Boulder Roots, Hot Spots

Visit The Unseen Bean!

Hey, Boulderites! Two of our favorite coffee+tea spots around town recently got a visit from Yellow Scene Magazine and Boulder’s Local Table Tours. No word on whether or not anybody tried out a cup of Tea Spot tea, but I’m not afraid to report that the coffee at both Tee & Cakes and The Unseen Bean is phenomenal. So if you’re a tea drinker in a circle of coffee nuts (as most of us tea drinkers seem to be), these are places that are sure to satisfy both of your palettes. Check out what Yellow Scene has to say about these spots here, then go grab a cup of Organic Dark Roast Oolong at The Unseen Bean, or try out slightly sweet cup of Boulder Blues at Tee & Cakes while your friends chug-a-lug their lattes!

Breadworks in Boulder Now Serving Tea Spot!

by Bo on 04/12/2011 in Boulder Roots, Hot Spots, Oolong Tea, Red tea

We’re more than pleased to be teaming up with our farmer’s market neighbors Breadworks at their bakery/cafe in North Boulder! They’ll be carrying a few more of our teas as time goes on, but are currently serving our Red Rocks and Coconut Oolong. If you’ve ever had either of these teas, you know they’re a real treat.

I’m on the fence about whether or not they’re quite as tasty as Breadwork’s amazing baked goods, sandwiches, soups (oh my, that tortilla soup) or salads. There’s just got to be a multitude of fine food and tea pairings on hand over at Breadworks, which I’m excited to taste as I help them build their tea list. So go go go check out Breadworks at 2644 North Broadway in Boulder, have a cup of tea and a treat, sit outside and look at our beautiful mountains!

2 New Locations Serving TeaSpot Teas!

by Bo on 03/07/2011 in Boulder Roots, Hot Spots, Loose Leaf Tea

Exciting news, Boulderites! Tea Spot teas are now being served at two great centrally-located coffee shops, so take your sipping to the streets!

THE UNSEEN BEAN

If you haven’t heard of The Unseen Bean and their amazing Blind Roasted Coffee, you’re missing out! These guys are located just off Pearl on the east side of Broadway, and in addition to bringing on a few Tea Spot teas, their roaster Gerry Leary creates some mighty tasty beans. Check out Gerry’s story here and see how he learned to roast entirely by sound and smell, and stop by the shop for a cup of goodness.

TEE & CAKES

I’m super excited that Tea Spot is being served at my favorite hangout, Tee & Cakes. Not only is this shop a Boulder favorite for its inventive, saliva-inducing baked goods, but it’s also run by one of the friendliest crews in cafe history. You think I’m exaggerating, but I’m not. Stop by and say hi to owners Kim Boos & Brian Wood, sample some of our tea or manager/barista Jenny’s new girl scout cookie inspired latte, and don’t you dare forget to dig your teeth into this famous Boulder nosh:

Chocolate. Bacon. Cupcake. The sheriff of baked goods in Boulder. If you’re not already on your way to Tee & Cakes, then you didn’t make it this far into my blog post. As for the rest of you, who can’t make it to our delightful mountain home, wander over to www.teeandcakes.com and get distracted by Brian’s fine graphics and Kim’s fine oven-baked creations.  And if you are from Boulder, what are you still doing reading this? Go get yourself a smile and a sweet from the crew at Tee & Cakes!

Getting comfortable with loose leaf tea

by maria on 02/11/2011 in Black Tea, Boulder Roots, Loose Leaf Tea

I love it when I first notice a new employee get really comfortable with loose leaf tea. Some jump right in, and start happily steeping up loose leaf tea in the break room their very first day here. Others almost noticeably avoid the break room, loose leaf teas and teaware at first, staying at their desks while the others imbibe…. But everyone who’s ever worked here can attest to the fact that they all eventually find their way over to the sunny side, and become fans of this healthful beverage.

Yesterday, I had two new reminders of how this rings true.

I met our ex-sales manager for breakfast, to catch up and also give her a silent auction Tea Spot donation for a charity she’s supporting, Colorado Youth at Risk. She said she’s watched her new company (a cycle jersey maker in Denver) start steeping our teas, and noticed the same progression.

Then, in the afternoon, our wholesale operations manager, who has more actual contact with tea than just about anyone here at The Tea Spot, had a super-dark and smoky brew going in his tea mug. What is that, I asked? “I mixed some organic Lapsang with Pu’erh bricks – it’s pretty awesome”.

Yep, he’s a guy’s guy :)

Red Chai Recipe

by maria on 11/08/2010 in Black Tea, Boulder Roots, Cooking & Tea, Herbal Tea, Loose Leaf Tea, Red tea

Just last week I submitted this recipe to About.com, and wanted to share it here with all our Tea Spot customers as well :)

Red Chai is a recipe which we at The Tea Spot hold dear. Our inspiration for this delectable Chai concoction comes from the roots of our company. Originally, The Tea Spot stood as a tea bar in downtown Boulder, Colorado, exposing us to a variety of customers. Along with their business, came a myriad of cultures, experiences, and passions. In our search for the perfect Chai recipe, we solicited recipes and methods from as many Indian cooking experts as we could find. Through patrons, personal, and business connections, we received great feedback and a host of Masala Chai recipes. During our testing and tasting process, we honed in on this particular method of Masala Chai preparation. Though the traditional Assam tea-based version was vastly popular, we adapted our process to green and herbal teas as well. The resulting caffeine-free organic Rooibos version became a signature cafe drink with the regulars. My personal favorite twist on this recipe is to make it with soy or almond milk.  Steep it up and drink to your health!

Ingredients:

Spice mix: 8 g cloves (1.5 tsp); 8 g fresh cardamom (2 tsp, or 1 tsp if using ground cardamom); 18 g fresh ginger, chopped (1 heaping TBS); 1/2 bay leaf; 1 tsp fennel; 1 tsp peppercorns 1 stick cinnamon.

50 g (1/2 cup) Red Rooibos tea leaves

1/4 cup (4 oz) honey

2 cups milk (you may also use soy or almond milk)

Method:

1. Steep spice mix in 8 oz boiling water. Marinate overnight in fridge. Strain out spices from marinade.

2. Steep tea leaves in 2 cups boiling water for 6 minutes. Strain out Rooibos.

3. Add honey and strained spice mix marinade to Rooibos tea.

4. Heat milk to just below boil.  Combine with Rooibos tea and spice marinade, and serve immediately.
